LIBERTARIAN CANDIDATE ANNOUNCES FOR FIRST DISTRICT CONGRESSIONAL SEAT.

Cedar Rapids resident, Russ Madden, met supporters at the home of Mark Nelson in Davenport, Iowa, on 10-08-99, to announce his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives. Mr. Madden is challenging Republican incumbent Jim Leach.

As a Libertarian, Russ Madden seeks to restore our national government to its Constitutionally mandated role as defender of citizens' rights. "The Bill of Rights was created to place limits on what the government can do," Madden said. "Adults should be able to engage in whatever voluntary, peaceful behavior they wish. It's called freedom. And with that freedom comes personal responsibility.

"For too long, government has decided for us what we should do and how we should do it. It has taken over the moral choices each of us should be making for ourselves. Not only will we all be individually and collectively better off when the politicians leave us alone, it's the right thing to do."

Madden's political fliers encapsulate his position: "It's...Your Responsibility. Your Decisions. Your Money. Your Life. Hold on to them. Your Life Belongs to You."

Madden is a college instructor in writing and communication. He has published essays and articles dealing with political issues both in print and on-line. His work has appeared in Ideas on Liberty, Laissez Faire City Times, The National Educator, The Social Critic, SpinTech, The Mercury, The Daily Objectivist, Real Mensch, Summa Philosophiae, and other newspapers and magazines. His freedom-oriented work has also appeared in publications in Bolivia, Guatemala, New Zealand, and Germany.
